Learning Resources
Below there are a range of great resources/ideas which you might find useful at home.
Home Reading
At Wellington, we know that reading is the single most important skills we give our children, but why is it so important?
- Children who are read to daily will hear 1.4 million more words than those who are not read to daily. (Logan et al 2019).
- Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success. (OECD, 2010).
- Reading helps to develop children as thinkers and to develop their imagination.
- Reading helps children to develop empathy for others.
- Children who are read to regularly by parents aged 5 perform better in Maths, Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar at age 16 than those who are not read to at home. (Sulivan and Brown, 2013).
- It’s fun and can help children with their mental wellbeing.
How can parents support reading at home?
- Listen to your child read aloud for 10 minutes every day. Record this in your child’s reading record.
- Take turns reading aloud with your child.
- Read aloud to your child at any age.
- Discuss books with your child – share opinions, predictions, questions.
- Ask questions about the books they read – what, when, why, where, how?
- Visit the local library with your child.
- Be a reading role model for your child. If children see adults enjoying reading, they will enjoy reading too!
