Physical Education and Sport Premium
The government provides funding directly to primary schools to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children. Wellington Primary School received £19620 in the 2023/24 academic year.
At Wellington Primary School, we recognise the significant contribution of sport and PE to the health and well-being of all children. In addition, we believe that an innovative and varied PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of all children.
Vision:
All pupils leaving Wellington Primary School will be physically literate and have the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy lifestyle, both mentally and physically, instilling in them lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.
Objective:
To achieve self-sustaining improvement in the quality of PE and sport at Wellington Primary School.
We would expect indicators of such improvement to include:
- The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – kick-starting healthy active lifestyles.
- The profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement.
- Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport.
- Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils.
- Increased participation in competitive sport.
Use of the premium at Wellington Primary School
At Wellington Primary School, the money will be used so that all children benefit regardless of their sporting ability. We will continue to place a high priority on our PE provision and, as such, have invested in additional staffing and resources to further enhance the PE curriculum.

Impact of the premium at Wellington Primary School
The impact of the premium on PE and sport at Wellington Primary School has continued to be extremely positive in the 2022/23 academic year.
The evidence for this is as follows:
- Observations of PE lessons were graded as good or outstanding.
- Quality of planning, resources and curriculum have all improved, such as the purchasing of additional sports and PE equipment for use at play times and lunch times and all staff receiving training from Sports UK relevant to their year group.
- Pupil progress and outcomes have significantly improved.
- There has been an increase in the number of high quality extra-curricular sports clubs provided to pupils, such as football, basketball and cricket across the school.
- There has been an increase participation in the number of inter and intra-school competitions.
- Many of these clubs have led to sporting success through participation in inter-school competitions. These have been celebrated through the school newsletter and social media platform.
- The raised status of PE and sport has had a huge impact on the children’s sense of belonging.
At Wellington Primary, we are committed to further improving our sports provision and as such, will be continuing to monitor the impact this premium has in our school very closely during the 2023/2024 academic year.
