Physical Education
Intent
At Wellington Primary School we recognise the importance PE plays in the curriculum and are committed to providing all children with opportunities to engage fully in Physical Education. We intend to develop children’s basic physical competencies, enable children to build confidence in their ability and develop the foundations for a lifelong love of sport, physical activity and leading a healthy lifestyle. Our PE lessons enable children to practise their skills through competition against both themselves and others whilst also improving their physical, social, emotional and thinking skills by incorporating the underpinning values and disciplines that PE promotes. These skills are embedded in the heart of our planning.
Our objectives align with the National Curriculum in that we aim to ensure all pupils:
- Experience a broad range of activities within each year group.
- Develop depth of knowledge and skill level progression as they move up the year groups.
- Become passionate about leading healthy and active lives outside of school.
- Are physically active for sustained periods of time everyday, whether this be at playtime, in sports clubs or during PE lessons.
- Engage in competitive sports and activities
- Are given opportunities to take part in out of school competition’s and activities.
- Build self-esteem, confidence and resilience
Implementation
At Wellington Primary School, children are provided with challenging and enjoyable learning experiences through a range of sporting topics. These include; invasion games, net & wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor & adventure. We use a progressive planning scheme to teach our PE from Reception to Year 6. This scheme ensures that children are given a wealth of opportunities to develop their physical movement with skill progression as the children move up the school. In Nursery children begin to develop the foundations of movement through accessing the Physical Development strand of development matters. This is taught discretely within the continuous provision throughout the day and through some focus activities. Within Reception, children begin take part in formal PE sessions once a week, whilst also continuing to develop their skills within their continuous provision.
From KS1 upwards, children have at least 2 hours of quality PE sessions a week. In a PE session you will see:
- Consistency in lesson structure
- Opportunities for children to work both independently and together
- Opportunity for children to perform and feedback
- Subject specific vocabulary that builds on previous learning/year groups
Children have the opportunity to attend inter-school competitive sporting events within the local area. Prior to some events, at least once a year, each Year Group invites a specialist sporting coach into school to deliver a lesson to the children.
In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities. After school sports clubs are available for KS1 and KS2 pupils, and children have the opportunity to use outdoor play equipment at lunch and breaktimes
Long-Term Overview:
Impact
Our curriculum is designed so that children are taught a variety of activities throughout their key stage. Year-on-year, there is a progression of skills and a deepening of understanding. Children are able to identify sports that take their particular interest through exposure to a broad range of topics and activities. With cross-curricular support from Science and PSHE, our PE curriculum teaches children to take responsibility for their own health and fitness and develop of love of sport.
Outside of class, children have the opportunity to take part in extra-curricular activities and demonstrate their new skills in intra and inter sports competitions. In the Summer term, all children have the opportunity take part in a sports day. At Wellington Primary School, children become confident within the different strands of PE and show resilience when tackling new skills.
